HP zd8000 and Ubuntu Feisty Fawn

Posted by duane on September 18th, 2007

As noted in my last post I recently dropped a new hard-drive in my laptop and with installed Windows Vista Ultimate.  I left a 15GB of unpartitioned free space at the end for Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn.  The install went very well and almost everything worked out of the box. GOING WIRELESS

The zd8205us has a Broadcom 43xx 802.11g wireless card and required some special work to get it up and going. A visit to here linked me here, which provided the needed information to get it installed.

Basically, you have to get the tool for extracting the driver firmware, download the drivers from Broadcom, and extract the firmware with the tool.

sudo apt-get install bcm43xx-fwcutter
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o
sudo bcm43xx-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o

Then you are able to load the drivers for the wireless nic

sudo modprobe bcm43xx

At this point with a standard install it should pick up and allow connection to any wireless connection available (the wireless on/off softkey even works).

Just fire up the network manager on Ubuntu’s desktop taskbar and you should soon be presented a list wireless networks to connect to. For me, I had no problem connecting right away to a WPA enabled access point.

EYE CANDY

My next step is to get Beryl or Compiz Fusion up and running to add the eye candy.  When I get that done I’ll post my experiences and instructions.
