Installing Windows Vista on an HP zd8000 laptop

Posted by duane on September 17th, 2007

Installing Vista on my HP zd8000 was fairly trivial with the exception of the built-in Texas Instruments PCIxx21 CardBus Controller four-in-one media reader.

I recently got a new harddrive (7200 RPM 100GB 8MB Cache Western Digital) for my laptop to replace the slow stock 80 GB drive (to my great dissapointment WD released a 200GB version a mear two weeks later! So I may be doing this again soon).

Anyhow, I decided it was time to see about making use of my MSDN subscription and upgrade to Windows Vista Ultimate.  The install went very well.  In fact, everything seemed great. Until I tried to pop in an SD memory card.

My zd8205us has a built-in Texas Instruments PCIxx21 CardBus Controller four-in-one media reader. Buy 36 Beauty 5 Mg, Nizoral Overnight Delivery. Online-Aktionen & Gratis-Geschenke.   It turns out that it has no Vista drivers available.  So I turned to google and found this post on technet.

Here is what I did:

  • Download the XP drivers from ACER (knew they were good for something): http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/tm_c200.html
  • Select cardread from the MS Windows XP dropdown.
  • Save the cardread.zip file.
  • Extract the zip file somewhere
  • Go to the device manager and find the unknown device, right-click and choose update driver.
  • Choose the location where you extracted the driver (you might have to go all the way to the last directory from the extract.

Congratulations, you have a fully functional Vista Laptop.

With my new harddrive and 2GB of memory I get 3.7 on the Windows Experience Index, the only reason it is below 4 is because of the 128 MB ATI X600.  All in all the system runs very smooth and look very slick.

My next project is to get it dual booting to Ubuntu 7.04 with Compiz Fusion or Beryl for some sweet eyecand cleocin uk. cleocin, cleocin t, cleocin cream, cleocin oral, cleocin antibiotic, cleocinFind medical information for Cleocin T Top including side effects, drug interactions, images and pictures, medication uses, warnings, user ratings and reviews. Had problems with three hardware devices on ZD8203AP not having drivers. Wondering if you can help?

    PCI Modem
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_266D&SUBSYS_3082103C&REV_03

    Mass Storage Controller
    PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8033&SUBSYS_3082103C&REV_00

(I think this may be the cardbus controller as described above)

    Conexant AC—Link Audio
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_266E&SUBSYS_3082103C&REV_03

    Any help very much appreciated.

what about the graphics drivers? are you using default microsoft? I am unable to locate x600 drivers for vista from HP. any hints greatly appreciated ;)

    Jono:

The only device that I didn’t have support for out of the box was the TI Card Reader.

This one sounds a lot like the Texas Instruments card reader. Might not be a card reader but it probably is Texas Instruments (VEN_104)

    Mass Storage Controller PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8033&SUBSYS_3082103C&REV_00

My info for the TI cardreader is as follows:
    PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8031&SUBSYS_3082103C&REV_00

So it is a different device, but probably something from TI.

    Phil:

I’m using the provided MS driver. Although I have used the Omega drivers before (but not in Vista).

I installed vista business as well on my hp 8205us and I love it and runs smooth. I think it is actually faster a better running than xp. The only issue that I am having is, the sound works, but it just seems kind of distorted a little when I play back music. I have checked all of the settings nothing is turned up too loud to provide the distortion, I was just wondering is it the driver. I got the conextant driver for vista. Are you having the same problem? What driver did you use?
Also, my mic input seems to pick up some serious feedback. Any solutions? Not really sure if it is related because I never used the mic input with xp
    Thanks,
    Derek

  5. duane Says:

I haven’t noticed any problems with the sound during playback. I believe I’m just using the default drives that Vista installed with it. I’ve only used the mic input a couple times and didn’t notice any issues.

    Duane,

Have you had any issues with th wireless LAN not working after the Vist install? I just installed Vista Business this weekend and initially I had no issues with the wireless. The wireless antenna button above the keyboard lit up and I could access the internet with no problems. Then I installed SP1 and my wireless doesn’t work now. Have you had any similar issues? The antenna button will not come on and there is no way to turn the wireless on from within Vista. I had tried googling a solution but I cannot find one. I tried to uninstall the drivers and reinstall but nothing fixed the problem. You have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Paul

    Paul,

I’m sorry (for the lack of help for you, happy for me), I’ve been running SP1 on here since it was released to the developer community through MSDN subscriptions and didn’t have any problems at all with wireless playing nice. The wireless button enables/disables the wireless with no problem.

    Hi Duane,

I own a HP PAVILION ZD 8200 CTO, and I upgraded to Vista Ultimate. Everything was fine, but the media card reader wasn’t working. I followed every step you described, and it appearently worked just fine, as shown by the device manager. But when I pop in a Memory Stick Pro Duo 1GB (using an adaptor), nothing happens.

Any help will be really appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Carlos

  12. duane Says:

I don’t use Memory Sticks so not sure. It does work with SD cards though.

  13. Prabh Says:

Installed the said driver on ZD8181ea and it works fine. Ater installation of the drivers, the device manager recognises the device as ‘Texas Instruments PCIxx21 Integrated FlashMedia Controller’. Device tested with 1GB SD card (IMPACT brand) - works fine without any issues.

    Thank you so much.

  14. junk_collector Says:

Thanks for the tip, duane - worked like a charm on my Windows 7 beta installation.

  15. timo606 Says:

what hard drive was it cause i cant find a 7200 drive for the zd8205us. and what kind of interface does it have? sata? ata-6.

  16. darnit Says:

You da man .. cardreader driver works on 7!!! Drivers complete now.. cat thank you enough!!!!!!!!!!

  17. duane Says:

timo606: it is an ata drive. They are becoming a little harder to find now days-I got it at newegg.

Darnit: I suppose I should update this to indicate it works on 7 as well. I have put 7 on my new laptop but not on that one (I did have the beta on it a long while back).
